রবীন্দ্রচর্চা আমাদের জীবনচর্চা

The Tagore Research Institute is an educational and cultural Institute which was set up on 1st January, 1965 by Somendranath Bose and his associates to pursue a comprehensive study of the entire personality of Rabindranath Tagore, his literature and other creative activities, his times and the other luminaries who surrounded him.
It was felt by the founders of this Institute that in spite of all the treasure that Tagore has left for mankind, particularly for the Bengali speaking population, in our day to day life we only come across such of his creations which relate only to the performing arts. The familiarity of most of the ordinary citizens with Tagore seems to be limited to singing his songs, reciting his poetry, and performing his dance dramas. While his writings are present in a scattered manner in our school and college curriculum, it is quite inadequate to familiarize us with all facets of his personality and creativity. With the aim to broaden the scope, the Institute introduced a diploma course of two years on Tagore Studies, where an attempt is made to give a more complete description of the man that was Tagore and his thoughts. The course involves a well thought out curriculum laid out in eight different papers. Students sit for examination in four different papers in each of the two years of the course. Many of the teachers of this course are noted college and university teachers, or have similar scholastic accomplishments. The course is running successfully for more than half a century.
Apart from the above curriculum, the Institute tries to increase the familiarity of the general public with Tagore in many different ways. Throughout the year seminars in different topics of Tagore studies are held. The Institute has a specialized but rich library which covers publications on Tagore as comprehensively as possible. The Institute has a publication wing through which several valuable research publications related to Tagore are brought out. A quarterly journal, devoted entirely to Tagore, is being brought out by the Institute for close to 45 years. The Institute collaborates with organizations with similar aims and wherever possible takes part in seminar and workshops on Tagore studies. The Institute also takes part in book fares and exhibitions to publicize its publications and other activities. All the workers of the Institute, including the teachers, donate their time to the Institute voluntarily and do not get uany remuneration for their activities. Other than one caretaker of RabindraCharchaBhavan (রবীন্দ্রচর্চাভবন), there are no salaried staff in the Institute. Similarly, celebrated artists who have performed at the Institute over the years and reputed scholars who have lectured at the Institute have all done this without any honorarium. The Institute’s current habitat, the RabindraCharchaBhavan (রবীন্দ্রচর্চাভবন) has been built entirely on private donations, without any government support.
In spite of a continuous resource crunch and various other problems, Tagore Research Institute has never looked back. It is a vibrant organization. It has gained recognition all around including the cognoscenti that it is unique as a Tagore centric institution of research and study.
